Can-do Attitude

“Beans, beans, the magical fruit.
The more you eat, the more you toot.”

Caleb takes great pride in reciting this naughty rhyme every time we open a can of baked beans for brekkie. We love our baked beans on toast (with a sprinkle of Parmesan on the top and then grilled to melting perfection) which means it’s on the breakfast menu once a week at the Rodericks’ residence.

I usually rinse out all aluminium cans and chuck them in the recycling bin, but over the past few months I’ve found more and more ways to reuse them.

Here are some of my ideas:

Knock down the Piggies!

1. We used them for Caleb’s Angry Birds party for a game of Knock Down the Cans. The kids had to take aim and knock over those Naughty Piggies with a ball.

Cutlery cans (painted by the kids)

2. They can be dressed up and used to hold all sorts of things – cutlery, stationery, bits and bobs…

3. Drill holes into them. Have a design in mind (for example: a starburst) and use the tins as beautiful tea-light holders.

Pots for plants

4. Plant herbs and small plants in the cans. Make a few holes at the bottom for drainage and keep them on your kitchen window-sill for easy access.

So tell me, do you re-use anything around your home? Got a cool idea to re-purpose aluminium cans? Do you use a lot of canned foods? And do you like baked beans?
